Do Hashtags Still Work in 2026? Limits and Counts Per Platform

Instagram caps you at 30 hashtags and 2,200 caption characters. Here are the real limits on all 9 platforms, plus how many tags to actually use.

Hashtags still work, just not for what most people use them for. They are a topic and search signal now, not a reach lever. Adding 25 of them to a post will not get you distribution, and removing them will not tank you either.

The hard caps are easy to state: Instagram allows 30 hashtags and a 2,200-character caption, TikTok gives you 2,200 characters with hashtags counted inside that total, YouTube ignores all of them past 15, and Threads allows exactly one topic tag. Full table below.

TLDR: Use 3 to 5 specific hashtags per post as a filing label, well under every platform's cap, then put your real discovery effort into the words in your caption, your on-screen text, and your audio. That is what in-app search and the recommendation feeds read in 2026.

Mydrop data, September 2026: across 7,945 posts on 336 accounts connected to Mydrop, hashtag count moved median engagement by at most 5% in either direction. Posts with 6 to 10 hashtags ran 5% above their account's typical post, posts with none 4% below. Method and full tables in the Mydrop social media benchmarks.

Why hashtags stopped driving reach

Every major platform moved to interest-based distribution. Your post gets shown to people the system predicts will watch, save, or reply, based on the content itself and on early engagement. Nobody sits in a hashtag feed waiting for new posts anymore.

Instagram said publicly that hashtags do not boost reach, and recommends a small number of relevant ones. TikTok's For You page has always been behavior-driven. LinkedIn quietly stopped surfacing hashtag follows. The pattern is the same everywhere.

So hashtags shifted jobs:

  • Classification. They tell the platform what your post is about, which nudges who it gets tested on.
  • Search. People do tap and search tags, especially on Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest.
  • Campaign tracking. A branded tag still collects entries, UGC, and event content in one place.

Hashtag and caption limits on every platform in 2026

The caps are the platform's hard rule. The recommended count is what actually performs.

Platform Caption limit Hashtag cap Use this many Where they go
Instagram 2,200 characters 30 3 to 5 Caption or first comment, same reach
TikTok 2,200 characters No separate cap, tags count toward the 2,200 2 to 3 Caption only
LinkedIn 3,000 characters No cap 1 to 3 End of the post
X 280 characters, 25,000 on Premium No cap 0 to 2 Inline or at the end
Facebook 63,206 characters No cap 0 to 2 Caption
YouTube 5,000 in the description 15, and going over makes YouTube ignore all of them 2 to 3 Description, the first 3 show above the title
Pinterest 500 in the description 20 0 to 2 Description
Threads 500 characters 1 topic tag per post 1 Caption
Bluesky 300 characters No cap 0 to 2 Caption

Two things to take from that table. Nowhere on it is a case for 30 hashtags, even where 30 are allowed. And the caption limits are far larger than anyone uses, so the real constraint on what you write is attention, not characters. Our caption length guide has the counts that actually hold a reader per platform.

Where they still earn their spot, ranked honestly: Instagram (search plus topic signal), TikTok (classification and search, not reach), Pinterest and YouTube (weak, but the fields are indexed), then LinkedIn, X, Threads, Facebook and Bluesky, where a tag is a label and very little else.

TikTok caption length and hashtags: what shares the 2,200 characters

This one trips people up, so it is worth being exact. TikTok's caption field holds 2,200 characters, and your hashtags are counted inside that total, not added on top. Spaces and emoji count too. TikTok raised this from 150 characters, so most advice you will find is years out of date.

What that means in practice:

  • You are not fighting for space. Two or three tags cost you maybe 40 characters of 2,200.
  • Spend the room on searchable wording, not more tags. The first line is what shows before the "more" cut, so put the keyword there.
  • Put the tags at the end, after the sentence a human reads.
  • Skip #fyp and #viral. They describe nothing, so they classify nothing, and TikTok has had years of them.

A caption that works on TikTok in 2026 looks like a sentence someone would type into search, followed by two tags that name the subject. Not a wall of trending tags with three words in front of it.

Hashtags in the caption or the first comment?

On Instagram, reach is identical either way. Instagram confirmed this, and the 30-tag cap counts both places together, so moving them to a comment does not buy you extra tags.

So pick on looks and workflow:

  • First comment if you want a clean caption in the feed, and you are scheduling posts that auto-publish the comment.
  • Caption if you want the tags visible and tappable, or if you are posting manually and might forget the comment.

Everywhere else, keep them in the caption. TikTok, LinkedIn, Threads and Pinterest either weight caption tags more or offer no comparable comment slot.

How to pick tags that do something

Pick for specificity, not volume. A tag used on 40 million posts tells the platform nothing and puts you in a feed you cannot compete in. A tag used on 15,000 posts describes you.

A workable mix for a single post:

  1. One niche tag that names exactly what you do (#sourdoughbakerysydney, not #food).
  2. Two topic tags at mid-size, roughly 10k to 500k posts, that match the post's actual subject.
  3. One community or format tag your audience genuinely follows (#studiovlog, #marketingops).
  4. Your branded tag, every time, so your archive stays collectable.

Skip: banned or spam-adjacent tags, engagement-bait tags (#follow4follow, #likeforlike), tags that do not describe the post, and copy-pasted blocks reused on every upload. Repeating an identical 30-tag block is the clearest low-effort signal you can send.

Do the discovery work in the caption instead

This is the part that replaced hashtags. In-app search now reads your actual words.

  • Front-load keywords in the first line of the caption, phrased the way someone would search it.
  • Put text on screen in Reels, Shorts, and TikToks. It gets read by the platform and by muted viewers.
  • Say the keyword out loud. Auto-captions turn your audio into indexable text.
  • Fill in alt text on image posts.
  • Name your files and cover frames descriptively before uploading.

If you want the deeper version of this, our guide to optimizing for social search on TikTok and Instagram goes platform by platform. And if reach is the actual problem, hashtags are rarely the cause, so start with what actually moves engagement.

Test it on your own account in 30 days

General advice is a starting point. Your data settles it.

  1. Pick one platform and one content format so you are comparing like with like.
  2. For two weeks, post with 3 to 5 specific tags. For the next two weeks, post with none.
  3. Keep everything else stable: same posting times, same format, similar hooks.
  4. Compare reach from non-followers and search or explore impressions, not total likes.

Most accounts see a difference small enough to be noise, which is the useful finding: it frees you to stop agonizing over tag lists. If one platform does show a real lift, keep tags there and drop them elsewhere.

Mydrop makes this test less painful. You can schedule both variants across your content calendar in one pass, keep hashtag sets saved so you are not retyping them, and read the non-follower and search breakdowns per post in Performances instead of exporting three dashboards. Its AI caption tools will also suggest tags scoped to the post rather than a generic block.

Audit your last 10 posts this week

Open your last 10 posts. Count how many hashtags you used, then check which of those posts actually got non-follower reach. If there is no relationship, cut your tag list to five and spend the saved 10 minutes rewriting your first caption line as something a person would type into search.

That trade is where the return is now.

FAQ

Quick answers

Instagram allows a maximum of 30 hashtags per post, counting any you add in the first comment. Allowed is not the same as advisable: 3 to 5 specific tags is the range Instagram itself recommends.

TikTok gives you 2,200 characters and your hashtags are counted inside that total, not on top of it. Two or three descriptive tags leave you plenty of room for searchable wording.

No, but they no longer drive reach on their own. Every major platform now distributes content by predicted interest, and hashtags act as one weak topic signal among many rather than a distribution channel.

Either works the same for reach on Instagram. Put them in the first comment for a cleaner caption, and in the caption if you want them visible and tappable. On TikTok, LinkedIn and Threads, keep them in the caption.

Search-friendly wording. Keywords in your caption, on-screen text, spoken audio, and alt text are what feed in-app search and the recommendation systems that actually decide who sees your post.

Barely. In Mydrop's September 2026 data on 7,945 posts, hashtag count shifted median engagement by 5% at most, so pick 3 to 5 that describe the post and spend the effort on the caption.

Stop coordinating around the work

If your team spends more time chasing approvals, assets, and publish details than creating better posts, the problem is probably not your people. It is the workflow around them. Mydrop brings planning, review, scheduling, and performance into one calmer operating system.
